Newsweek and the Washington Post on Faith
Since 9/11, people have been talking about religion more and more. Now, Newsweek and the Washington Post
have teamed up to provide a forum for discussing various beliefs, called simply, "On Faith
". Begun as a follow-up from a series of personal conversations between Jon Meacham
and Sally Quinn
. the site features panelists from a variety of religious backgrounds and a forum for discussion of religious beliefs. The idea is to increase understanding and to educate people about the beliefs of others.
This site demonstrates the growing interest among the general public in discussing religion in public, to discuss that which defines a person instead of avoiding those controversies. As people grow in understanding of each other, unlike the opinions of John Lennon and Elton John, perhaps such discussions will promote peace. Perhaps.
The line, of course, lies between syncretism/universalism and offense, so this experiment should answer the question as to whether we as Americans and a world community are able to walk that line.
