Late pope wanted to change church law

If late Pope John Paul II was to have his way, there would be a new law allowing popes to reign only until they are 80 years of age. This is part of the messages carried in a book, “A Life with Karol” written by the pope’s private secretary.Should popes have to retire at 80?
