Man in right-to-die case mourned outside church

Hundreds of mourners gathered Sunday at the lay funeral of a paralyzed man who had a doctor disconnect his respirator. The Roman Catholic Church denied a religious ceremony for Piergiorgio Welby on the grounds that he sought to end his own life, a decision that prompted some at his funeral to display signs that read: "Church, shame on you."
 So what is the proper way for churches to handle a situation that runs contrary to their teachings?
